چکیده

Aromatic compounds are widely distributed in nature. They are found as lignin components, aromatic amino acids, and xenobiotic compounds, among others. Microorganisms, mostly bacteria, degrade an impressive variety of such chemical structures. Various aerobic aromatic catabolic pathways have been reported in bacteria, which typically consist of activation of the aromatic ring through oxygenases or CoA ligases and ring cleavage of dior trihydroxylated intermediates or dearomatized CoA derivatives. We survey almost 900 sequenced bacterial genomes for the presence of genes encoding key enzymes of aromatic metabolic pathways, including ring-cleavage enzymes as well as enzymes activating aromatics or dearomatizing CoA derivatives. The metabolic diversity is discussed from two angles: the spread of such key activities among different bacterial phyla and the overall metabolic potential of members of bacterial genera.

AromaDeg, a novel database for phylogenomics of aerobic bacterial degradation of aromatics

Understanding prokaryotic transformation of recalcitrant pollutants and the in-situ metabolic nets require the integration of massive amounts of biological data. Decades of biochemical studies together with novel next-generation sequencing data have exponentially increased information on aerobic aromatic degradation pathways. However, the majority of protein sequences in public databases have n...

Biodegradation of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons by Aerobic Mixed Bacterial Culture Isolated from Hydrocarbon Polluted Soils

In this study, the degradation potential of five polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) by aerobic mixed bacterial cultures was investigated. Microorganisms were isolated from hydrocarbon contaminated soils of Shadegan wetland located in southwest of Iran. The degradation experiments were conducted in liquid cultures. PAH or PAHs concentration was 100 mg/L at the beginning of degradation e...

Carbon and hydrogen stable isotope fractionation during aerobic bacterial degradation of aromatic hydrocarbons.

13C/(12)C and D/H stable isotope fractionation during aerobic degradation was determined for Pseudomonas putida strain mt-2, Pseudomonas putida strain F1, Ralstonia pickettii strain PKO1, and Pseudomonas putida strain NCIB 9816 grown with toluene, xylenes, and naphthalene. Different types of initial reactions used by the respective bacterial strains could be linked with certain extents of stabl...

Characterization and Kinetic study of PAH–degrading Sphingopyxis ummariensis bacteria isolated from a petrochemical wastewater treatment plant

The expansion of a microbial bank for the degradation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) is crucial for removal of these persistent pollutants. In this study, five gram-negative, aerobic, non-fermentative bacterial strains (III-R3, IV-P11, IV-P13, IV-R13, and V-P18) were isolated from the activated sludge of a petrochemical wastewater treatment plant using enrichment pro tocol based on...
